Preparing Your Puppy for Their First Groom

By Sarah · SJ’s Rebarkable Dog Grooming, Old Catton

Bringing your puppy for their first grooming appointment is an exciting milestone.

The earlier puppies are introduced to grooming, the easier it often becomes as they grow older. Positive early experiences help build confidence and create good habits for life.

Before your puppy's first appointment, you can help by:

  • Gently handling their paws
  • Touching around their face and ears
  • Introducing brushing little and often
  • Rewarding calm behaviour
  • Making handling a positive experience

During a puppy's first groom, the focus is often on introducing them to the grooming process rather than completing a full haircut.

This might include a bath, gentle drying, brushing and getting used to standing on the grooming table.

Every puppy learns at their own pace. The goal is to build trust and confidence rather than rush the process.

At SJ's Rebarkable Dog Grooming, I take time to help puppies feel comfortable so that future grooming appointments become something they can handle with confidence.
