Signs Your Dog May Be Nervous About Grooming

By Sarah · SJ’s Rebarkable Dog Grooming, Old Catton

Not every dog walks into a grooming salon with their tail wagging.

Some dogs feel unsure about being handled, hearing unfamiliar sounds or being away from their owners. Understanding the signs of anxiety can help you find the right support before grooming becomes stressful.

Signs that a dog may be uncomfortable with grooming include:

  • Shaking or trembling
  • Excessive panting
  • Trying to hide
  • Pulling away when handled
  • Barking or vocalising more than usual
  • Refusing to enter the grooming area

Many nervous dogs aren't being difficult. They're simply telling us they're uncomfortable.

A calm, patient approach can make a huge difference. Taking things slowly, allowing breaks and helping dogs build confidence over time often leads to a much better grooming experience.

At SJ's Rebarkable Dog Grooming, I work one-to-one with every dog. I take things slowly and allow breaks, adapting the appointment to the dog in front of me.

With time, understanding and positive experiences, some dogs can become more comfortable with grooming. Every dog progresses at their own pace.
